Student Highlights Spring 2026

Trevor Bonar

Our MPA students' capstone projects have impacts beyond the classroom! One recent example is Trevor Bonar's project in Fall 2025. Trevor is a Police Sergeant in the City of Bellevue, Kentucky, and he decided to focus his efforts on improving pedestrian safety in the city. He researched best practices in pedestrian safety and engaged community members to develop and implementstrategies, especially in the business district and near schools.

As part of the project, Trevor worked with Campbell Media on a public service announcement (PSA) video, which is being shared in the Bellevue community. The video has already been viewed nearly 10,000 times since it was shared on Campbell Media'sFacebook page a few weeks ago.

You can . Trevor is the police officer who speaks throughout it, starting a few seconds in. Outstanding work, Police Sergeant andMPA student Trevor Bonar!

Michael Frazier

Michael Frazier (MPA 2025) and Dr. Julie Olberding presented their research to theFederation of Community Councils (FCC) in Anchorage, Alaska. Specifically, they participated (virtually!) in the 2026 Leadership and Officer Summit, called "Charting the Course." The Anchorage FCC is a nonprofit organization with a mission is "to assist Community Councils to involve citizens in the governmental process at the neighborhood level."

Michael presented his MPA capstone project from Fall 2025, which involved developing a database of neighborhood governance systems in 15 cities in the United States such as Anchorage, Cincinnati, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City. Dr. Olberding shared survey data and analyses related to Cincinnati's Community Councils, including the relationship between a council's "internal capacity" and its effectiveness in terms of promoting civic engagement, resolving neighborhood issues, and advising on citypolicies.

Our Volunteer and Community Engagement class (PAD 622) was involved with multiple experiential, hands-on, real-world projects last semester! One group of students worked with Amara Kinney (MPA 2024) of the City Of Cincinnati's Office of Place-Based Initiatives in developing: 1) a volunteer program framework; 2) a volunteer handbook; 3) a volunteer orientation; and 4)volunteer position descriptions, background checks, and waivers.

Another group of students partnered with Rajani Menon of the Women's Fund ofThe Greater Cincinnati Foundation in developing: 1) an expansion plan for Appointed NKY, involving communication, community engagement, and volunteer management strategies; and 2) ideas to enhance their advocacy efforts such as a connection hub and "Advocacy Days." In addition, the class awarded a $2,000 grant -- via the Mayerson Student Philanthropy Project -- to the Women's Fund to help implement these ideas.

Thanks to Amara and Rajani for collaborating on these service-learning projects, to the 鶹ӾScripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement for adding the experiential philanthropy component, and to the students for applying their newly-acquired knowledge andskills. It was a win-win-win!
